Loyalty and betrayal rocks Azimio Senate constitution committee
It’s no longer business as usual in Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition side in the senate over a brewing revolt in the nomination of members to various House committees.
Disgruntled senators led by Nyamira Okong’o Omogeni have questioned the criteria used to place senators in various committees with claims of greed among the House leadership taking up more than two committee slots.
From the onset, the Nyamira senator pitched for his Kisumu counterpart who allegedly who locked out of the Justice, legal affairs and Human Rights (JLAC) despite his undisputed prowess in the legal profession.
Then he shared the injustice meted on Makueni Senator Dan Manzo, who he argued is a ranking member having been elected three times only to land one committee, while some members of the Azimio leadership will serve in four and five committees.
“It is a shame. I have served in this senate, I was here for five years when I was appointed chair of the Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights committee. I had to cede membership of the committee on Delegated Legislation because I could not get time to serve in three committees,” disclosed Omogeni.
He went on, “But what I am seeing, is a situation where somebody is in leadership and still wants to serve in four other committees. What are we trying to show? Leadership is not about you being greedy. leadership is about you giving opportunities to those who have the same qualifications to serve.”
The irked senator stressed that nobody is more special in the contribution they made in garnering votes for their party leader Raila Amollo Odinga.
“From the county of Nyamira, from the county of Kisii, we gave as much as the senator for Isiolo. Nyamira we delivered 129,000 votes to Raila Odinga, from Isiolo, Raila got 26,000 votes and he lost to William Ruto who got 32,000 votes. The only way to thank the Omogusii nation is to say we deserve nothing,” he criticized.
He went on, “Don’t we have the capacity to learn? Even in the county of Kisii where William Ruto got 134,000 votes against Raila Odinga at 263,000 votes, he has rewarded the Omogusii nation with the seat of Majority whip in the National Assembly because you must have regional balance. You must have fairness and we must speak these things because injustice anywhere should never be tolerated.”
He questioned, “where is justice when the names that have been read by the next person in leadership are also in five committees? Kitui senator Enoch Wambua is magnanimous, he has only been elected to serve in two committees. How can you explain that Makueni senator Dan Manzo, ranking member, serving his third term has been given membership in one committee whereas somebody else is taking four committees?”
Minority leadership
The Minority leadership comprises of senators Stewart Madzayo (Minority leader) deputized by Kitui senator Enoch Wambua and Minority Whip Senator Fatuma Dulo deputized by Narok senator Ledama ole Kina.
Senator Madzayo is in the Roads, labour and Delegated Legislation
Ledama in the Health, Energy, Public Investments and Special funds committee
Dullo in the JLAC, Security and Public Accounts Committee
Wambua in the Transport and Agriculture Committee
