Chebet, Lokedi lead Kenya to a sweep in New York marathon
Kenya dominated and won the elite men’s and women’s titles at the New York City Marathon for the third time in a row thanks to Evans Chebet and Sharon Lokedi.
Around mile 21, the Brazilian Daniel do Nascimento was passed by Chebet, who went on to win 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 41 seconds. Shura Kitata of Ethiopia finished second, 13 seconds later.
“Boston was actually harder, and it prepared [me] for the win in New York,” Chebet, who became the sixth man to win Boston and New York City in the same year.
This year, Kenyan men won all six of the major annual marathon competitions, the first time since 2011 (before Tokyo was a major).
Do Nascimento took the lead right away and reached the halfway point in 1:01:22, on track to shatter the previous course record of 2:05:06. After covering 15 miles with a lead of more than two minutes, he started to lose time.
Around mile 18, he reportedly used a portable toilet for 18 seconds. In the 20th mile, he briefly stopped and started walking. Chebet passed Do Nascimento a mile later as he was lying on the ground.
Galen Rupp, a two-time Olympic medalist and headlining American in the men’s field, dropped out around mile 17 or 18.
Over the final two miles, Lokedi, the 2018 NCAA 10,000m champion, outran Lonah Salpeter of Israel. The 28-year-old Lokedi won her first marathon by seven seconds with a time of 2:23:23.
“I’m out of words,” Lokedi said.
When Lokedi was 14, her family fled their home village of Burnt Forest that became an area of violence after a Kenyan presidential election. For a month, the family lived with no shelter or a steady source of food before returning after the conflict ended. Lokedi started running about two miles to and from school each day.
There will be one more anticipated 26.2-mile race in 2022, but New York City marked the final significant marathon of that year. Letesenbet Gidey, an Ethiopian who holds the 5000- and 10,000-meter world records, will run her first marathon on December 4 in Valencia, Spain.
