Keep off teacher recruitment, Ruto tells politicians
In order to allow the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to conduct its business professionally, President William Ruto has instructed members of Parliament to refrain from participating in the ongoing teacher recruitment.
Ruto concurred with MPs, though, that the application deadline should be extended and that TSC should be permitted to hire staff for schools that will have junior secondary schools (JSS) when they open next month.
Since TSC posted more than 35,000 job openings this month, some MPs have been accused of organizing unemployed teachers from their regions to lock out others seen as outsiders.
Marjan faces tough questions at tribunal
Marjan Hussein Marjan, the head of the electoral commission, was challenged yesterday to show what legal violations commissioner Irene Masit committed to justify her suspension.
Marjan was also questioned about why he was involved in results management despite not being a commissioner during a charged tribunal hearing at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in Nairobi.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) secretariat chief claimed during cross-examination by Masit’s lawyer, Donald Kipkorir, that the “Cherera Four,” the four commissioners who disowned the results of the presidential election, broke the law by hiring lawyers to represent the commission.
Tuju and Salat visited Cherera Four at city apartment, tribunal told
Raphael Tuju, the executive director of Azimio One Kenya, reportedly paid a visit to the four IEBC commissioners under fire at an apartment in Yaya that had been reserved for them.
From August 15 to August 19, they allegedly spent four days at the apartments, where they were visited by Nick Salat, the embattled secretary general of Kanu, and Tuju.
A representative of Yaya Centre Apartments testified before the Justice Aggrey Muchelule-led tribunal on Thursday that Irene Masit and the three former commissioners Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, and Justus Nyang’aya spent four days at their facility.
Meal allowance shocker for civil servants from SRC
After the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) advised against such payouts, civil servants who receive daily subsistence allowance (DSA) while on assignment away from their work stations will no longer receive meal stipends.
Officers who travel on official business within the nation but are not required to spend the night away from their duty station are currently eligible to receive a meal allowance.
Civil servants, however, have abused the provision by collecting billions of shillings in meal allowance in addition to the DSA each year, which amounts to double payment.
World largest oil firm Aramco enters Kenya through buyout
The largest oil producer in the world, Saudi Aramco, plans to buy the local presence of US motor oil and lubricants company Valvoline in order to enter the Kenyan market.
Aramco Overseas Company, the investment arm of Saudi Aramco, received approval from Kenya’s Competition Authority (CAK) to purchase VGP Holdings’ operations in Kenya as part of a $2.65 billion global deal.
The acquisition appears to be going to cause changes in Kenya’s fuel lubricants market, which is currently controlled by multinational corporations like Vivo, which sells products made by Shell, Total Energies, and Rubis.
KNCCI President Ngatia appointed to world business lobby
The World Chambers Federation (WCF) has appointed Richard Ngatia, the president of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI), to a two and a half year term beginning on January 1, 2023.
The appointment of Ngatia, the first Kenyan to serve on the council of the influential trade chamber lobby, is seen as a major boost for regional businesses.
City beat Liverpool in thriller
In a thrilling Carabao Cup match, Manchester City’s Nathan Ake scored the game-winning goal as his team defeated league champions Liverpool 3-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
After a month of inactiveness due to the World Cup, City and Liverpool sprang back into action with a vengeance as Fabio Carvalho (20) quickly erased Erling Haaland (10)’s opening goal.
Two minutes after the half, Riyad Mahrez gave City the lead back with a nudge, but Mohamed Salah of Liverpool equalized in the next 47 seconds thanks to Darwin Nunez’s cut-back after a quick counterattack.
