Former Education CS George Magoha dies aged 71
Former Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof. George Magoha passed away on Tuesday at the Nairobi Hospital after a short illness.
Magoha, who was 71 years old, was a medical doctor by profession, having studied in Kenya and trained in four other countries.
He was born in 1952 and undertook his primary education in Yala and Nairobi before joining Starehe Boys Centre and Strathmore College for his high school education in Kenya.
He then proceeded to the University of Lagos where he pursued his interest in medicine. In his 91-page CV, he described himself as “a top grade Professor of Urological and Transplant Surgery since 2000 at the University of Nairobi trained in Nigeria, Ghana, Ireland and United Kingdom.”
Magoha is remembered for his tough-talking, no-nonsense, strict and selfless leadership style.
He left an indelible impression in every leadership position he had been appointed to, including the University of Nairobi and the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Barbara O. Magoha, and son, Dr. Michael Magoha.
Three more killed in Kerio Valley
Three people have been shot dead by bandits in Kerio Valley, sparking off protests from local leaders who want President William Ruto to take action on his pledge to end banditry.
The three, including a police reservist, were shot dead at Koibirir in Marakwet East, where residents said the raiders from West Pokot made away with hundreds of livestock.
Rift Valley regional commissioner Abdi Mohammed said a security operation was underway to arrest those involved and return the stolen animals.
Area MP Bowen Kangogo and Baringo North MP Joseph Makilap have asked President Ruto to summon a national security committee meeting to discuss the banditry crisis and how to deal with it effectively.
Chebukati alleges Tuju offered reward to moderate polls in favour of Raila
Former chairperson of IEBC, Wafula Chebukati, has accused Raphael Tuju of offering to reward him if he changed the election results to favour Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
Chebukati was testifying before the Aggrey Muchelule-led tribunal formed by President William Ruto to investigate the conduct of the ‘Cherera Four.’
Chebukati said that Tuju offered him a monetary reward and that four commissioners, including Irene Masit, allegedly pushed for moderation of results since the margin between the two candidates was small.
He said Masit pushed for a rerun and the commissioner wanted them to move the 233,000 votes so that they have a rerun.
No work calls after hours, new Bill in parliament says
A proposal to enact a law that would prevent employers from interfering with employees’ personal time by limiting contact after hours has been met with strong opposition from the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE).
The Employment (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which is being fronted by Nandi Senator Samson Cherarkey, seeks to introduce ‘the right to disconnect’ by employees, allowing workers to ignore work-related calls, messages, and emails during out-of-work hours.
The Bill also pushes for employers to put in place a policy to explain circumstances when they may contact employees during out-of-work hours and specify the nature of compensation for employees who work overtime.
Ethiopia and Angola economies to surpass Kenya, IMF
According to projections by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Angola and Ethiopia will replace Kenya as the third-largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa, due to faster GDP growth in those countries and slower growth in Kenya.
Angola’s return to growth linked to higher oil prices saw it overtake Kenya last year, and Ethiopia is set to replace Kenya from position four due to easing armed conflict and the continuation of an ambitious economic reform drive.
Kenya’s slower growth of 2.4 percent, due to the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, drought, election jitters, and disruption of global supply chains, is expected to weaken its ability to attract foreign direct investment, which is critical in addressing the growing youth unemployment on the continent
More details on why Ruto placed plans to expand Rironi-Mau Summit highway on ice
Fresh details have emerged on the reasons behind President William Ruto’s decision to put on hold plans to expand the Rironi-Mau Summit highway into a dual carriageway.
Concerns about motorists being forced to pay toll charges and the absence of alternative routes for those unwilling to pay are among the reasons for the project’s suspension.
Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the KES 160 billion project was too expensive “and would put an unnecessary loan burden on Kenyans”.
The government plans to construct a bypass on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway near Nakuru City instead.
The move is among others that the Ruto government has made to either pause or roll back projects initiated by his predecessor.
Unilever ordered to review supply agreements, shorten payment periods
The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) has ordered Unilever, the consumer goods firm, to review all its supply agreements and shorten the payment periods after the company was found to have exploited traders who supply it with goods.
CAK found that Unilever had abused its buyer power and is now liable to a fine of up to KES 10 million or a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years.
Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Unilever must reduce payment terms for all existing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from 90 to 60 days and then to 45 days from January 1, 2025. For all new SMEs, Unilever must pay within 30 days.
The company will also be expected to increase its procurement from SMEs, invite at least two local SME suppliers to all tenders and other procurement procedures and dedicate an annual budget of KES 75 million to undertake supplier development training for its SME suppliers for a period of three years from January 1, 2023.
Sports
FKF Premier League fixtures
Reigning champions and league leaders Tusker FC will be aiming to claim their second win in a row when they play Ulinzi Stars at Kasarani Annex on Wednesday.
The Brewers reclaimed the top spot on Sunday after a 1-0 win against Sofapaka, following two consecutive draws and a defeat. They now lead the 18-team league on 23 points, one above second-placed KCB. Ulinzi Stars, on the other hand, will be looking to return to winning ways after their draw against KCB last Sunday.
In the other fixtures, KCB will have a chance to go top if they beat Posta Rangers at Kasarani Annex, Mathare United will be seeking their first win of the season against Bidco United at the Utalii Grounds and strugglers Vihiga Bullets will be seeking redemption against highflying Nzoia Sugar in Sudi.
Newcastle edge Saints in EFL semis first leg
Newcastle United hold a slender advantage in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg as Joelinton’s goal gave them victory at Southampton.
The Brazilian made amends for missing an earlier opportunity when he arrived on the end of substitute Alexander Isak’s perfect low cross to make the decisive contribution with 17 minutes left.
The match also saw Southampton defender Duje Caleta-Car sent off in the closing minutes for a second yellow card, and a goal from Adam Armstrong disallowed for handball by VAR.
The two sides will meet again at St James’ Park in the second leg on Tuesday, 31 January, with Newcastle now favorites to reach their first major Wembley final since the FA Cup in 1999.
