EPL wrap: Liverpool tumbles, 10-man United roar

The 22nd game week of the English Premier League (EPL) was marked by surprising results, as league leaders Arsenal were defeated by Everton while Liverpool suffered another setback at Wolves. Meanwhile, Manchester United continued their winning streak at home with a hard-fought victory over Crystal Palace.

Everton 1 – 0 Arsenal

Sean Dyche made a positive start to his managerial role at Everton with a huge 1-0 victory against Arsenal.

The win keeps the Toffees’ survival hopes alive and sparked joyous scenes at Goodison Park.

James Tarkowski powered home a header from Dwight McNeil’s corner to secure the win, while Everton’s solid defensive display kept out Arsenal, who have scored 45 goals this season.

Wolves 3 – 0 Liverpool

Liverpool’s poor form continued with a 3-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers, leaving them with just one win in their last five games.

The Reds fell behind after just five minutes when Hwang Hee-chan’s cross deflected off Joel Matip into the Liverpool net. The defending got worse seven minutes later, allowing Craig Dawson to mark his debut with a goal.

Liverpool managed just one shot on target in a poor first-half display but showed more fight after the break.

However, the hosts soaked up the pressure before hitting their opponents on the counter-attack, with Ruben Neves finishing after great work by Adama Traore.

The victory moves Wolves out of the relegation zone up to 15th, while Liverpool remain 10th.

Manchester United 2 – 1 Crystal Palace

10-man Manchester United recorded their 13th consecutive win at home in all competitions with a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

The Red Devils took the lead early on after Will Hughes was judged to have handled the ball inside the box.

Bruno Fernandes scored from the spot for his sixth goal of the season, while Marcus Rashford continued his blistering form, scoring his 10th Premier League goal of the season.

United’s Casemiro was shown a straight red card for violent conduct, meaning he will miss the home and away games against Leeds plus a meeting with Leicester, but will be back for the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle.

Almost immediately, Palace pulled the contest back to 2-1 through Cheick Doucouré’s mishit shot that came to Schlupp, who scored and celebrated fiercely, urging Palace on for an equalizer that never came.

Brighton 1 – 0 Bournemouth

Japan winger Kaoru Mitoma made the difference for Brighton with his fifth goal in his last seven matches, maintaining the Seagulls’ momentum with another victory.

The win was harsh on Gary O’Neil’s Bournemouth players, who could have taken all three points had they been more clinical.

Three more points for Brighton after another late winner from their latest star, Kaoru Mitoma.

Brighton moves to 34 points, just five shy of the top four, while Bournemouth remains in the bottom three.

Aston Villa 2 – 4 Leicester City

Brendan Rodgers’ January signings played their part in a welcome win at Aston Villa.

Tetê, the Brazilian winger on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk, scored to give Leicester the lead at the end of a packed first half, before the substitute Dennis Praet sealed victory late on.

Victor Kristiansen, a 20-year-old left-back signed from Copenhagen, was a strong contender for player of the match, while Harry Souttar, a £15m arrival from Stoke, rallied after his own

Ollie Watkins steered the home side ahead after Emiliano Buendia hit the crossbar, only for fit-again James Maddison to immediately level.

Watkins then drove a shot in off another new Foxes signing, Harry Souttar, but Kelechi Iheanacho equalised again with a header before Tete rounded Emiliano Martinez to put Leicester ahead at the break.

Philippe Coutinho had a goal ruled out for offside as Emery’s side piled on the pressure in the second half, but Rodgers saw his team seal the much-needed points when substitute Dennis Praet ran through to score.

Tomorrow; Nottingham Forest Vs Leeds, and Tottenham Vs Manchester City.
