London’s international organisation congratulates Cpt. Ruto on his KPA appointment
The president of the International Harbour Masters’ Association (IHMA) Captain Paul O’Regan, has written to the Kenya Ports Authority following the appointment of William Ruto as the new managing director. In the letter dated 20 March 2023, president Regan said, “We are proud to have had you as a member of the Association for the past five years and we look forward to sharing the knowledge and experience you will gain through your new role with the IHMA membership,” read the letter.
This signifies an avenue for boosting port operations in the country, with IHMA offering to support KPA boss in achieving his mandate at the parastatal which is also aimed at improving the Kenya’s economy through international trade.
Captain Ruto is also an associate fellow of the Nautical Institute (AFNI) and has been a member of IHMA since 2018.
The International Harbour Masters Association (IHMA) and Lloyd’s Maritime Academy joined forces to provide the world’s present and aspiring Harbour Masters and Port Captains the underpinning knowledge on legislation, risk management, navigational management, security, marine operations and management skills to enable them to meet the industry’s key challenges.
On Monday, Captain Ruto piloted a CMA CGM vessel sailing under the flag of Malta with a length overall of 294m to berth 22. During her stay at the port, she will discharge a total of 1865 containers or 2702 TEUs.
He attained the highest qualification as a Ship Captain (Class 1 Master Mariner) from South Tyneside Marine College in the UK. Until the appointment, he was the General Manager of the Kisumu Port.
“He piloted the vessel in 2018 breaking his own record & setting a new one with Manta Ray. She will also load 1963 container units (596 TEUs) of full exports and 765 TEUs empties and is expected to sail from the port on Wednesday,” said KPA.
Manta Ray discharged 2440 TEUs in the first eight hours breaking a five year record with 194 moves per hour against 192 moves recorded in 2018.
CMA CGM, a French container transportation and shipping company, is currently ranked the third biggest container carrier in the world with more than 584 vessels calling 420 ports in 160 countries. It operates three weekly services at the Port of Mombasa.
While visiting the port of Mombasa Monday, deputy president Rigathi Gachagua accompanied by cabinet secretary Transport & Infrastructure Kipchumba Murkomen, together with representatives and chief executive officers from over 10 French companies led by CMA CGM, said that the government is focused on enhancing efficiency and growing business through the Ports of Mombasa and Lamu.
DP Gachagua also lauded Captain Ruto’s appointment noting that his wealth of experience spanning 32 years will be instrumental in ensuring Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) delivers on its mandate to the people of Kenya.
“We want to applaud the board of directors for the choice of Captain William Ruto who has institutional memory and a proven track record of managing this port,” said DP Gachagua.
The deputy president expressed his confidence with the new board of directors tasking with a challenge of being competitive port of choice in the region and across the globe.
The Port of Mombasa is set to receive 37 vessels calling the facility in the next 14 days, of these container vessels account for seventeen, twelve conventional cargo vessels and four car carriers and oil tankers each.
