IGAD congratulates Ruto, Raila for their readiness to engage in dialogue
The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Workneh Gebeyehu has congratulated president William Ruto and Azimio One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga for their readiness to engage in dialogue to resolve differences.
Posting on his Twitter page, Workneh says, “I congratulate William Ruto and Raila Odinga for their readiness to engage in dialogue to resolve differences on national issues through peaceful means & preserve Kenya‘s unity and constitutional order.”
This came hours after Raila Odinga called off antigovernment protests that had been going on for the past two weeks. Raila, the head of the opposition, said the suggested bipartisan approach by Ruto would be the same to dictate if the protests would be back.
Raila calls off the Anti-government Azimio protest to engage in dialogue with Ruto
Azimio One Kenya Coalition leader Raila Odinga has called off the anti-government protest he has been leading for the past two weeks.
Raila noted that this week’s scheduled demonstrations have been called off.
He however added that the same will be reliant on William Ruto’s suggested bi-partisan approach to solving the IEBC selection issue.
Raila presented an opposing proposal to President William Samoei Ruto expressing that his party, Azimio, does not accept the results of the presidential election in August 2022 and believes that the country is currently experiencing its worst crisis.
“We are ready to embrace dialogue,” declared Raila.
Video: Ruto dispels allegations on plan to shut down mainstream media, internet
The head of state, William Ruto, has dispelled allegations of a plan to shut down the mainstream media and the internet ahead of Monday’s demonstrations.
“Just for the record, take it from me, Kenya has come a long way, the era of switching off this or that is way behind us. We will support the right of the media to carry out their functions. You have our absolute support irrespective of how biased against us,” said president William Ruto.
This comes after media stakeholders released a press statement expressing concerns over plans to shut down the broadcast media and the internet ahead of tomorrow’s demonstrations. This, they say, is ill-advised and would be a previous assault on Kenya’s democracy, as it would deprive Kenyan citizens of their rights to information from the media perspective.
Chelsea sack Potter after just seven months in charge
Coach Graham Potter paid for Chelsea’s poor form as the Englishman was sacked on Sunday after just seven months in the job.
The Blues had slipped to 11th in the Premier League table after a 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday despite spending over £500 million ($616 million) on new signings this season.
Former Brighton defender Bruno Saltor has been placed in interim charge.
Chelsea has won just three games in their last 11 but have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League where they face defending champions Real Madrid.
That tie may have been the decisive factor in the club’s new American owners pulling the trigger now, with the first leg in Madrid just 10 days away.
“We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person. He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we are all disappointed in this outcome,” co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said in a statement.
S.Sudanese troops join regional force in east DR Congo
South Sudanese soldiers arrived in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, an AFP journalist saw, joining a regional military force in an area battered by the M23 rebellion.
At least 45 soldiers touched down in the city of Goma in the late morning, with further contingents expected to arrive at later dates.
The South Sudanese soldiers are part of the seven-nation East African Community (EAC) military force, which was created last June to stabilise eastern DRC.
Much of the region is plagued by dozens of armed groups, a legacy of regional wars that flared in the 1990s and 2000s.
In North Kivu province, M23 rebels have captured swathes of territory and advanced within several dozen kilometres of its capital Goma since re-emerging from dormancy in late 2021.
