Richard Ngatia seeks re-election as President of Kenya National Chamber of Commerce
Business mogul Richard Ngatia has launched a campaign to retain his position as the Chamber President of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the upcoming elections to be held on June 8th, 2023.
Ngatia met with delegates from the six coastal counties at the Red Cross Hall in Malindi town, where he was endorsed by regional delegates. He will be deputized by Abduwali Shariff from Mombasa County.
The businessman will be seeking a second term as KNCCI President, having served since 2019. He has been instrumental in helping Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to get government incentives, especially during the Covid-19 period.
Among the issues he said he will focus on as he seeks votes are opening up international business opportunities for local business people, supporting the manufacturing industry to ensure that Kenyan products get international appeal, and hence, earning the country the much-needed foreign exchange.
He added that he will sign pacts with the national and county governments to ensure that business people enjoy a conducive business environment and that the special economic zones being put in place are a game changer that will support businesses.
“We want to see a chamber that is working very closely with various ministries, particularly the Ministry of Trade, just to see how we can be part of the special economic zones being put in place. We want to see as many special economic zones being put across this country since they will support businesses,” he said.
Ngatia said that he will help increase KNCCI membership in the country as a way of boosting its visibility in the country and beyond.
“We want by the end of the term to improve our membership so that we can see as many people get into this wonderful organization. To increase our visibility not only in the country but also in the region but most importantly in the globe as we seek partnerships with different foreign direct investors and local partners to see how best they can be able to work together,” he said.
Ngatia, who was named Chamber President in 2019 after his opponents pulled out a month before the polls, taking over from Kiprono Kittony, will be battling it out with his Vice President, Erick Ruto.
The business magnate also holds the chairmanship of the General Assembly of the Great Lakes Region Private Sector Forum, a position he attained in 2019.
He added that his leadership will also seek ways to explore new ventures in the East African community to tap into the 400 million population and also the COMESA, AGO, and EU market to sell 6,000 products.
“We want to really emphasize on exports, and that way we shall be able to mitigate the effects of high dollar rate. So we want to export more so that we can earn more foreign currency into our country,” he said.
“I have committed and have promised that we shall continue with the good work we have been doing, and I wish all those vying for the positions all the best. I believe the best team will win,” he added.
Ngatia is confident of defending his seat, saying that he has support from most regions in the country.
