Kenya Power CEO’s claim that Sh 20 token can cook githeri sparks debate
Kenya Power Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Joseph Siror’s claim that Sh20 tokens can cook githeri has sparked a lot of reactions online.
Speaking on the introduction of e-cooking during the Nation Media Group’s leadership forum on Tuesday, Siror said Kenyans are afraid of using electricity to cook because they think it’s expensive, when in fact it’s cheaper than the alternatives available.
“You can actually cook githeri with Sh 20. The idea that using electricity to cook is more expensive is more of a perception than a reality.”
He argued that Kenya Power was ready to prove to consumers that cooking with electricity is cheaper when using induction and pressure cookers.
This didn’t go down well with Kenyans on social media, most of whom took to Twitter to complain about how they used to cook githeri using electricity, but their electricity bill was so high that they had to resort to cooking gas or even jiko.
Others took a pragmatic approach to the debate, with Cytonn CEO Edwin Hande advising netizens to argue with facts.
“If you have data on how much energy it takes to boil githeri, just put it on the table to counter them. Data and facts are very powerful arguments,” he said.
Another Twitter user, @W_Asherah, defended Siror, saying that his statement was correct, but that you have to invest in a pressure cooker. She added that pressure cookers are quite expensive and good ones cost thousands of shillings.
She added that if the Kenyan government could lower the price of electric cookers, then the introduction of e-cooking would be effective.
In response to @W_Asherah, a user argued that they have a pressure cooker and have had to minimise its use because their electricity bill has increased by more than Sh800 in one month since they bought it.
“Gas is cheaper than electricity,” she said.
One Karani Mutonga, who claimed to be a pressure cooker user, said that an average electric cooker uses 3.5 kilowatts of electricity. Mutonga added that cooking githeri for two hours would consume seven kilowatts of electricity, and if a unit of electricity costs about Sh30, it would take about Sh210 to cook githeri and Sh20 to pay for it.
After doing the maths, one user, Erling Sholla, calculated that Sh20 worth of electricity was equivalent to 0.7 units of electricity, and argued that it wasn’t enough to cook a proper meal.
“0.7KW can’t even cook ugali and vegetables,” Sholla said.
One Alfred dared the CEO to demonstrate practically; that’s the only way he would believe it. Another tried cooking ugali using the minimum token purchase of Sh. 25 and said it didn’t work.
Others argued that with KPLC’s unreliability, citing the 10-hour power outage that occurred in August, many people would sleep hungry if they were to rely on them.
