Cherargei alone as UDA distances itself from 7-year presidential term proposal
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has officially distanced itself from the conversation surrounding the proposed seven-term presidential term limit propagated by Nandi Senator Samson Cheragei.
In a press statement dated Monday, September 25, the UDA Party stated that it respects and upholds the Senator’s personal views. However, particularly on the referenced subject, those views do not reflect the perspectives of the UDA Party or the Party Leader, President William Ruto.
“The President solemnly swore to respect, uphold, and defend the Constitution, which is abundantly clear and categorical on the Presidential term limit. The Ruling Party is presently focused on delivering on its promises to the People of Kenya, mindful that it shall, in due course, submit its scorecard for the people to evaluate,” the party’s secretary-general, Cleophas Malala, stated.
Malala continued to say that the UDA party is guided by a timeline for the next general election.
“This is why, for the past few months, the UDA party has published a timeline portal for all its electoral activities, therefore, the term limit debate is superfluous and peripheral,” the statement added.
Ugenya Member of Parliament (MP), David Ochieng, strongly criticized the proposal. During an appearance on a local TV show on Monday, September 25, the Ugenya lawmaker expressed his view that Senator Cherargei’s proposal is impractical, asserting that the constitution should not be altered to cater to the desires of a select few.
Cheragei became the centre of a social media storm over his proposal to extend presidential terms from the current five to seven years.
Cherargei’s proposal formed part of the submissions to the National Dialogue Committee (NDC), which concluded its collection of public memoranda last week.
The constitution currently provides for a five-year term with a maximum of two terms, meaning that any change to the constitutional framework would require a referendum.
