Kisumu boda boda riders get free fuel as campaigns for UDA grassroots polls begin
Campaigns for positions in President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have begun in earnest ahead of the December 9 grassroots elections in Azimio la Umoja One Kenya leader Raila Odinga’s Nyanza backyard.
On Friday, one of the candidates for the Kisumu County chairmanship took the city by storm as his motorcade, accompanied by hundreds of bodaboda riders, snaked through the city centre.
Mr George Ayugi alias Mbuta is eying the post in the December polls.
His supporters aboard motorcycles rode in the streets of Kisumu, a region that has backed Mr Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in the past elections.
The boda boda operatives refilled their tanks for free at a local petrol station and walked away with yellow UDA T-shirts courtesy of Mr Ayugi’s campaign team.
UDA now enjoys a total of 7,020,275 members according to the latest report from the Office Of the Registrar of Political Parties.
In Nyanza, Homa Bay County tops the list in terms of its membership in the region.
Homa Bay County has 137,210 UDA members followed by Kisumu with 70,525, Migori has 58,287 and Siaya 51,163 members.
