The error that cost Chef Maliha longest cooking Guinness World Record
After months of waiting to be ratified as the Guinness World Records (GWR) for the longest solo cooking session has suffered a setback.
Coastal-based Kenyan chef Maliha Mohammed has revealed that she was disqualified because of one error.
In an update she shared on social media, Maliha said that she was heartbroken that she had been disqualified by GWR who communicated to her regarding her disqualification.
According to GWR, during the attempt at rest break sequence 7, additional minutes were taken that were not accumulated.
They said that it is not permitted to make up rest breaks as it must only be accumulated.
“In the interest of fairness across all applicants, we can only approve a record when all of the guidelines have been adhered to fully. We appreciate this is disappointing news to receive but hope it does not deter you from any future record,” GWR said in their communication.
After receiving the heartbreaking news, Maliha asked for forgiveness from her fans who had been waiting for the record adding that she believes God has other plans for her.
She added that she had been disqualified after disregarding certain guidelines.
“Hey, guys. It is with much sadness to inform my family, friends, fans, sponsors, followers, and everyone who showed love and support towards my journey in the November cooking marathon,” she shared on her Instagram page.
“Upon my manager’s advice, I have to let you know I was disqualified for one error made during my rest break. I am not okay right now. I ask for your forgiveness to have let you all down. It wasn’t easy.”
On November 19, 2023, Maliha attempted to claim the longest cooking marathon (individual) award after clocking for 150 hours, 11 seconds, breaking the previous record of 119 hours 57 minutes, 16 seconds set by Irishman Alan Fisher on November 7, 2023.
She prepared more than 400 local and international recipes including coconut beans, fried fish, mandazis, mukimo, githeri and international cuisines like Indian biryani and chapatti in the cooking marathon.
She also cooked Portuguese chicken peri peri and more than 10 different types of pizza.
Speaking after the GWR attempt, Maliha said that she endured six gruelling days where her mental and physical strength were tested to the limit. During that period, every second felt like an eternity, but also an opportunity to push beyond limits.
“Embarking on this journey was undoubtedly one of the most difficult yet fulfilling undertakings of my career. This has not just been a personal triumph but a celebration of the resilience that resides within each one of us. It has been a journey and labour of love from Kenyans from all walks of life,” she said then.
The record was to be confirmed in two weeks after Guinness World Record authenticated the pictures and videos but it was never heard from.
She is no stranger to pushing culinary boundaries. In her initial attempt she lasted an impressive 90 hours and 15 minutes, shattering the previous record of 68 hours, 30 minutes, and 1 second.
She was named Woman of the Year in 2021 as part of the Kenya Women Tourism Awards and was honoured to be among the 100 most influential Kenyan Muslims, an award given by the Muslim Media Company.
