‘We don’t recognise him’: The supposed Vihiga relatives of Collins Jumaisi
The mystery surrounding the origins and residence of suspected serial killer Collins Jumaisi Khalusa extended to his alleged rural home in Vihiga County, where residents and the local administration were unable to identify him.
Attempts by NTV to locate his ancestral home turned into a wild goose chase, with locals saying they did not know much about the man, who is said to have worked as a boda boda operator in the region.
Speaking to Ouko Okusah in Malovu village in Vihiga County, the alleged ancestral home of Collins, purported relatives said they did not recognise the names or the person whose image appears in the photos circulated by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
Our search for the suspect’s family began at Shamakhokho market, where Collins was said to have once run a boda boda taxi business in the commercial centre. Not even the pictures of the suspected serial killer released by the DCI could jog the memories of the residents here, our two-day search would end at Malovi village where the mystery surrounding the true identity of the suspected serial killer would take an unexpected turn.
Boniface Karanja, an alleged cousin of Collins, reveals some confusing information. According to Boniface, his family is being linked to the serial killer simply because one of his now deceased uncles had the surname Jomaisu, which is similar to the suspect’s middle name, and was also born in Vihiga.
Boniface says his uncle separated from his wife, Rose Khatushi, in 1992 and that she left the village with their four children and settled in Migori County. He says his cousin, believed to be Collins, left the village at the age of 2 and was called Ketrin Shiusa.
While the DCI had stated that the suspect was 33 years old, Boniface estimates the age of her missing cousin to be around 37.
