Travellers to spend Sh12,000 per trip in new SGR executive coaches
Kenyans will have to fork out Sh12,000 for a one-way ticket between Mombasa to Nairobi while boarding the newly launched executive passenger train. However, a return ticket will cost Sh20,000.
Transport Principal Secretary Mr Mohamed Daghar, who promised an enhanced services, said the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) tickets for first class and economy will remain as they are.
“Premium Class charges will be Sh12,000 for one way and Sh20,000 for a two-way trip between Nairobi and Mombasa. You will save Sh4,000 once you pay for a return ticket. We have received four first-class coaches and four premium coaches,” said Mr Daghar.
Speaking while receiving 20 new coaches including Economy Class, First Class and Premium Class at the Kenya Railways station in Mombasa, the PS said the new facilities will boost passenger railway transport.
The PS said from 2017, Kenya Railways has managed to move 12 million passengers while targeting 8.8 million passengers annually, according to its 2023-2027 strategic plan.
“We have 10 for the economy class where the seating arrangement has been redefined to either be facing the destination or the departure station where you left. We have also received four first class coaches where there are new added features into it,” explained the PS.
Mr Daghar said the premium coaches are the first of their kind in the region, with comfort and passenger support features.
Each coach can carry up to a maximum of 28 passengers.
The seats are fully reclinable to form a flat bed and have charging points for mobile phones and other devices.
“You are also looked after to a Kenyan cuisine alongside your journey, we will also offer a blanket and many other features. In first class we also have a redefined seating, served food and the seats are much more different,” explained the PS.
However, for economy class, Mr Daghar said Kenya Railways had received feedback from Kenyans about the lack of charging facilities since 2017 when the service was launched.
“We are happy to announce that we now have four charging stations in each seating arrangement, we have also introduced both baby changing and lactating rooms in every coach. We also have a dining area for stretching and serving food throughout your journey,” he added.
The PS said demand for SGR train services was high, especially for government officials, parastatals, schools and churches, which he described as the biggest clientele.
“We can now meet their capacities and ferry more passengers between Mombasa and Nairobi,” said Mr Daghar.
