Drama as Nakuru county officials arrested over attempt to reopen closed road
There was drama at Naivasha GK prison after armed warders clashed with officers from Nakuru County who were re-opening an access road linking Naivasha town to Kinangop.
During the incident several county officials including Malewa East MCA Francis Kuria who is also the chairman of the roads committee in the Assembly were arrested.
Trouble started after residents of Karati joined the county officials in re-opening the access road which was closed in unclear circumstances back in 2019.
Hours into the exercise, tens of warders arrived and arrested the MCA and some workers but they were released later following intervention from senior government officers.
According to the MCA, the move to block the access road had for years inconvenienced area residents who had to travel for over 30kms to access the road.
Kuria said that despite intimidation and threats from the prison authorities, the county would not be cowed into rethinking its decision to open the road.
The MCA said that works on a bridge connecting Naivasha town and residents of the ward was stopped by the prison management leading to massive losses for the county.
Viwandani MCA Mwangi Muraya who was present condemned the arrest and intimidation of the county officials adding that they would make sure that the road was reopened.
A resident James Njuguna told of their suffering after the road was blocked four years ago forcing them to use longer routes to their homes.
This was echoed by David Karanja who lauded the county for the bold move to reopen the road despite threats from the prison management.
