Over 20 shops closed indefinitely over sewage leak in Kericho town

More than 20 shops and hotels within Kericho town have been closed indefinitely after the Kericho water and sanitation company(Kewasco) failed to repair a leaking sewage line.

The sewage is said to have been leaking for the past two months.

Traders and their customers have been forced to use masks following a strong stench emanating from the sewerage line.

Josephine Momanyi, 58-year-old Samosa seller, told NTV that the open sewage system had affected her health and well being.

Residents said they have raised the matter with Kewasco management but no action had been taken.

Ms Rosemary Chepkirui Rop, the CEC for Water Environment and Energy said the issue was being addressed.

Meanwhile, Kewasco employees have downed their tools over unpaid salaries for the last 17 months, amounting to Sh177 million.
