71-year-old Kasarani granny arrested with bhang admits trafficking charges

A 71-year-old woman found selling chang’aa, bhang and suspected narcotic tablets at her home in Kasarani, Nairobi, has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges.

Ms Susan Wanjiru Kamau was found with 50 litres of chang’aa, 40 rolls of bhang and 30 tablets of a substance suspected to be narcotics at her house in Marurui village.

Ms Kamau was arrested by the police on 22 September after the assistant chief of the area received information that she was selling the prohibited substances.

The administrator led officers from Marurui police station to the granny’s house, where she was arrested and the substances were recovered.

She was charged with trafficking in narcotics. Ms Kamau was also charged with possession of alcohol that did not meet the required standards.

Ms Kamau pleaded guilty to the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti of the Makadara Law Courts, claiming that she was running the business out of desperation to provide for herself and an adult child in her care.

The tablets of the yet-to-be-identified substance were hidden in gumboots at Ms Kamau’s home and police also recovered one kilogram of bhang leaves.

Ms Kamau will be remanded in custody until 6 October when she will be sentenced after the prosecution submits the drugs as evidence in court.
