Bipartisan talks resume amid friction between Kenya Kwanza, Azimio
The National Dialogue Committee (NDC) under the leadership of Kikuyu Member of Parliament (MP) Kimani Ichung’wah and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is set to commence bipartisan discussions today on Monday, September 11.
The committee’s focus will encompass various critical matters, including the restructuring of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), boundary delimitation, and a comprehensive review of the 2022 General Election, among other pertinent topics. The National Dialogue process aims to chart a course forward following a standoff between the government and the opposition.
Established with parliamentary approval on August 29, the NDC comprises a 10-member core team, complemented by an additional 8-member technical support team comprising leaders from both the Kenya Kwanza Alliance and Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party.
The NDC has been given 60 days to facilitate discussions and deliver a report to Parliament.
Addressing Azimio supporters on Sunday, Kalonzo Musyoka reiterated the committee’s unwavering commitment to addressing electoral justice in the nation and resolving contentious matters arising from the 2022 election.
Meanwhile, Azimio-One Kenya leader Raila Odinga reaffirmed his position on the talks with the Kenya Kwanza Alliance but issued a stern warning against any breaches of the agreement.
Kalonzo emphasized that discussions concerning the 2027 elections should only proceed after resolving issues stemming from the 2022 elections. He emphasised that the initial focus of the NDC would revolve around electoral justice, including a thorough examination of the server.
Raila implored members of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance to honour the dialogue process and collaborate constructively to address the concerns raised by Azimio. He cautioned that a lack of seriousness from their counterparts could result in Azimio withdrawing from the discussions.
Raila said, “We have embraced these talks, and that’s why we have appointed Kalonzo to lead our delegation. We will give them an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue and find enduring solutions to these issues. But if they bring disruptions, are you prepared?”
Kalonzo added, “Raila has advised me that when we participate, we must remain vigilant. If they are not genuinely committed, we cannot afford to waste time in this country.”
In contrast, Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua expressed scepticism about the ongoing government-opposition talks, viewing them as a futile endeavour.
Gachagua voiced his reservations, stating, “Raila’s intentions regarding national dialogue are questionable. He seeks to engage with President William Ruto while simultaneously penalizing leaders who engage with the same President.”
He also called upon Ichungwah to refocus his efforts on serving his constituents instead of the dialogue.
President William Ruto had previously expressed no objection to the establishment of the opposition leader’s office, as long as it did not lead to nationwide ‘maandamano’.
