Ruto, Gachagua at odds over govt ‘shares’
Recent statements by President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua have revealed that the two are not reading from the same script when it comes to inclusiveness in government.
While the President is keen to make new allies in Nyanza region, promising residents that they will not be left out, he is assuring them that he is now friends with the region’s political kingpin, Raila Odinga.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on the other hand, maintains that plum government jobs remain the preserve of those who supported the Kenya Kwanza candidates.
While this may be perceived as divisive, Gachagua says he doesn’t believe Nyanza will support Ruto.
However, President Ruto’s comments during his recent tour have largely focused on assuring Nyanza residents that he has their best interests at heart.
“I am the President of the entire nation and you are citizens, therefore this government is also your government, do not worry, we are going to work together as people of Kenya, we are stronger together, we are weaker when we are divided, we do not want politics of division,” said Ruto.
But Gachagua insists that it is a government of shares and that those who supported President Ruto will be given priority in government.
“I am not apologetic, I have no apology to make to anybody for instigating that only those we know well who believe in President William Ruto’s vision should be entrusted with sensitive dockets,” Gachagua said.
Despite the disagreement between the two, Gachagua says he has no axe to grind with his boss. According to Gachagua, they consult constantly and insist that they are sending the same message.
The disagreement between President Ruto and his deputy comes at a time when the government is in talks with the opposition through the National Dialogue Committee.
And while details of a meeting between Ruto and Odinga ahead of the talks are still being kept under wraps between the two, the DP has consistently insisted that there is no seat at the table for the opposition leader.
A section of Nyanza leaders have vowed to support Ruto’s re-election and rally the region behind him, but the DP is not convinced.
“Whatever they say in big gatherings, I don’t believe, you know I’ve been around for a long time… I’ve seen it, people praise you but when it comes to voting, nothing… but if it’s true that they want to support the President, we welcome them,” said Gachagua.
President Ruto has maintained a deliberate silence on his deputy’s sentiments but his assurance to the populace in Nyanza may speak volumes on his stand, sending a message of trouble in paradise.
