Raila vows to continue fight for electoral justice
Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition, has stated that he will not accept a “nusu mkate” agreement or a handshake from President William Ruto.
In an interview with KTN News, Raila accused former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati of being behind what he terms as ‘rigged’ 2022 General Election.
Raila gave three conditions that must be met if he were to hold any talks with President Ruto. Firstly, he demands the opening of IEBC servers. Secondly, he wants the Head of State to suspend the recruitment of new IEBC commissioners.
Finally, he demands that the Kenya Kwanza administration lowers the cost of living.
In the interview, Raila dismissed claims that he is seeking a “nusu mkate” government with the Kenya Kwanza administration. He defended his handshake with Ruto’s predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, saying that he agreed to work with him to reform the country.
He further claimed that he has evidence proving his votes were stolen in several parts of the country.
“He (President Ruto) is not ready for any talks,” said Raila.
“There is no basis of talking with him because he maintains a hard stance despite knowing he did not win the election. He is an imposter and his conscience should at least prick him,” he added.
He alleged that an elaborate scheme to rig the elections started before the appointment of four IEBC commissioners in 2021. Raila alleges that Chebukati procured a compliant IT firm to set up the election infrastructure and colluded with its officials to manipulate election results.
He further alleged that Chebukati did not involve his deputy and commissioners in major decisions and instead connived with two commissioners to turn the election in favour of Ruto.
Apart from electoral reforms, Raila also decried the high cost of living that he says the Kenya Kwanza administration has created. He criticised Ruto’s decision to remove subsidies that cushioned Kenyans from the ongoing global economic crisis.
The president has come under sharp criticism from the opposition since removing these mitigation measures. Raila accused his government of failing to cushion Kenyans amidst the high cost of living.
He went on to criticise the Hustlers’ Fund, saying that a KES 500 loan is not sufficient to start a business.
Raila vowed to continue his push for electoral justice and lowering the cost of living, no matter how difficult it may be. He urged Kenyans to join him in the fight, saying that the country needs electoral justice and economic reform for everyone to prosper.
