Catch him if you can: Omanyala sets record, beats 100m Olympic Champ
Ferdinand Omanyala, Africa’s fastest man, has broken his own national and African 60m record for the second time in a week.
The Kenyan sprinter won the Lievin World Indoor Tour meet in France with a time of 6.54 seconds, chipping off a hundredth of a second from his previous record.
Omanyala edged out Olympic champion Marcell Lamont Jacobs to clinch the title, with the Italian athlete finishing second with a time of 6.57 seconds. Ivorian Arthur Cisse finished third with a time of 6.59 seconds.
Omanyala had a slow start, with Cisse and Jacobs gaining a yard ahead of him.
However, once he hit the 50% mark, there was no stopping his breakneck acceleration, and he won the race with a powerful burst in the final half of the race.
Omanyala had shown good form heading into the final, easily breezing past his heat in 6.58 seconds. It was his third victory in the tour of France, having lost only in his first race in Miramas.
The 27-year-old sprinter, who broke his own record last week with a time of 6.55 seconds, said the new record was his personal best and a gift to his father.
Omanyala comes back to Kenya with his confidence high and his motivation on top of his game ahead of the start of the outdoor tour. The Nairobi leg of the Athletics Kenya meets is scheduled for the end of the month.
Omanyala has also expressed his excitement for the Diamond League season-opener set for May 5 in Doha, Qatar. The Kenyan sprinter said he was awaiting invitations to make a statement with a streak of masterstroke performances.
Omanyala purposely chose to compete in the 60m sprint to sharpen his starting strategy and increase speed. His focus is on polishing up his block starts in France because the 60m is all about the dash.
