Sporting events to look forward to in 2023

As we turn a leaf into the year 2023, the world of sports has much on the plate including World Rugby World Cup, FIFA Women’s World Cup and World Cross-country Championships.

Here are some of the sporting events to forward to;

January 16 to 29 – Australian Open

The 2023 Australian Open, the year’s first major sporting event, would be a highly anticipated tournament in Melbourne. It is the first Grand Slam to be staged following the retirement of tennis legend Roger Federer, whose final tournament was the September 2022 Laver Cup.

The women’s singles event has the most competitive competition. Iga Witek, the world number one tennis player from Poland, will be attempting to capture her first Australian Open championship after reaching the semi-finals in the 2022 event.

The three-time Grand Slam winner is seeded first in the 2023 draw, but he faces stiff opposition. The tournament also features 11 other current or previous Grand Slam champions.

Victoria Azarenka, Naomi Osaka, and Sofia Kenin are among those who have previously won the tournament. Former champions Petra Kvitova, Danielle Collins, and Garbié Muguruza are also in the draw.

February 10 to 26 – ICC Women’s T20 World Cup

The Women’s T20 World Cup will be contested in South Africa for the eighth time next year. Ten teams will compete, and they will be divided into two groups for the group stage, where each team will play each other once.

Following that, the top two teams from each group will compete in the semi-finals. Five-time champions and reigning champions Australia is in Group 1 with New Zealand, hosts South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, while India is in Group 2 with Pakistan, England, West Indies, and Ireland.

February 18 – 23, World Athletics Cross Country Championships

The 2022 World Athletics Cross Country Championships will be held in Bathurst, Australia.

Various cross-country championships will take place between January 7 and 21 when Athletics Kenya will host the National cross-country Championships at the Kenya Prisons Training College, Ruiru.

The residential Training Camp for Team Kenya is expected to begin on January 24, at Kigari Teachers Training College in Embu.

June 16 to July 16 – AFC Asian Cup 2023

Defenders of the title Qatar will host the Asian Cup for the third time, one year after hosting the FIFA World Cup. Every four years, the Asian Cup is held. India qualified for the tournament, which will be their fifth appearance. The Blue Tigers’ finest Asian Cup performance was a runner-up result in their inaugural campaign in 1964. India did not advance past the group stage in the 2019 edition.

Following an invitation from the OCA, players from Australia, New Zealand, and other Oceania countries were also anticipated to compete in the competition for the first time.

However, both Australia and New Zealand announced in April 2022 that they would not be sending athletes because none of the invited sports federations expressed interest.

China, which has won the most medals since the 1982 Asian Games, will host the competition for the third time, following Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.

In addition to Hangzhou, major events will be hosted in Ningbo, Wenzhou, Huzhou, Shaoxing, and Jinhua in Zhejiang.

The 2022 Asian Games will feature 61 sports events in total. Competitive Sports, Ball Sports, Adversary Sports, and Water Sports are the four categories of athletic events. E-sports and breakdancing are two of the disciplines that will make their Asian Games debut in Hangzhou.

September 8 – October 28 – Men’s Rugby World Cup 2023

The tenth edition of the men’s Rugby World Cup is scheduled for 2023.

It will be held in France from September 8 to October 28, 2023, in nine different locations across the country.

South Africa is the defending champion, having defeated England 32-12 in the 2019 final.

FIFA Women’s World Cup

The FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023 will be the ninth edition of the competition, hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand. For the first time, 32 nations will compete in the Women’s World Cup in 2023. Four-time winners and the defending champions, the United States of America, will compete in the competition.

The number of teams in the group stage will increase from 24 to 32 for the 9th World Cup, making it larger than prior championships.

World Beach Games

The second World Beach Games will be held in the Indonesian island paradise of Bali, on 5-12 August. The Games include a variety of beach and water sports, such as aquathlon, beach handball, beach soccer, beach tennis, beach waterpolo, and beach wrestling.

It will undoubtedly be entertaining, and it will be a fantastic opportunity to come to Bali and sit on the beach with your feet in the sand while watching world-class sports.

Gay Games

The Gay Games are a four-year international multi-sport event. It is a sporting and cultural gathering for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) athletes, artists, and performers, while the event is accessible to everyone who desires to participate, regardless of sexual orientation, as a massive statement of inclusivity.

Furthermore, because there are no eligibility requirements, it is truly open to everyone who wishes to attend. The event will take place in Hong Kong in November and will include 30 sports as well as community and cultural events.
