Tusker announces KES 2M sponsorship for Impala Floodlit tournament
Tusker has announced a KES 2 million sponsorship for the 38th edition Impala Floodlit tournament that makes a return since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The tournament commences this Saturday, October 29, and November 12 at Impala Grounds.
The contest has historically been held to kick off the rugby fifteens season. Charles Ngovi, chairman of the Impala RFC, expressed his excitement over the tournament’s comeback.
“The tournament, which has traditionally been played as the curtain raiser for the rugby fifteens season, will make a return after a two-year hiatus occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.
He added, “This year’s edition will feature a total of 22 teams, battling in three categories this —ladies, universities and clubs.”
The Kenya Cup, Championship, and Nationwide leagues will be used to select eight teams for each of the university and clubs divisions, while six teams will compete in the women’s division.
Defending champions KCB have been paired against Kenya Harlequin in the quarterfinals, while Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad and Strathmore Leos will square off in the second club quarterfinal.
Impala Saracens, the hosts, were paired with Nondescripts in the third quarterfinal, while Rift Valley-based teams Nakuru and Menengai Oilers square off in the fourth.
The University Category is back this year, with Strathmore Catulus taking on USIU Martials in the first quarterfinal, Catholic Monks taking on Blak Blad II in the second, Daystar Falcons facing Mean Machine in the third, and the Kenya U20 national team, Chipu, taking on Nakuru Universities Combined in the fourth.
